How to Plan a New Kitchen: A Step-by-Step Guide

Why Planning Is the Most Important Part of Any Kitchen Project

A kitchen installation that runs smoothly almost always comes down to what happened before the fitters arrived. The decisions made at the planning stage — layout, storage, appliance positions, electrical and plumbing routes — shape everything that follows. Get them right and the project runs on time, on budget and to a finish you will be happy with for years. At Shore Fit Kitchens & Bathrooms, we work with homeowners across the Wirral, Chester and Liverpool to guide every stage of the process from first idea to final sign-off.

Step 1: Define How You Use Your Kitchen

Before anything is measured or designed, think honestly about how your household uses the kitchen day to day. Do you cook from scratch most evenings, or mostly reheat? Do children do homework at the counter? Is the kitchen a social space where people gather, or a purely functional room? Do you need a breakfast bar, a utility area, or space for a large fridge-freezer? These questions should drive every layout decision that follows.

Step 2: Get a Proper Site Survey

A tape measure and a sketch are not enough. Older properties across the Wirral and Chester rarely have perfectly square or level rooms, and walls that appear flat may have significant irregularities that affect where units can go. A professional site survey identifies the exact positions of pipes, waste runs, boiler flues, window sills and load-bearing elements — all of which influence the design. Surprises discovered during installation cost significantly more to fix than surprises caught at survey.

Step 3: Establish Your Layout

The classic work triangle — sink, hob and fridge positioned for efficient movement between them — remains a useful starting point, but modern kitchen planning often works better with a zoning approach. A prep zone near the sink, a cooking zone around the hob, a storage zone for the fridge and larder, and where possible a social zone around an island or breakfast bar. Browse our kitchen ranges to see how different layouts work in practice, and consider how the kitchen connects to adjacent rooms, particularly in open-plan spaces.

Step 4: Plan Storage Before Aesthetics

Storage is the element most homeowners underestimate at the planning stage and most regret not planning better afterwards. Deep pan drawers instead of base cupboards, a full-height larder unit, pull-out corner units, integrated bins and appliance garages all need to be designed in from the start. They cannot easily be retrofitted once the kitchen is ordered and built.

Step 5: Coordinate Electrics and Plumbing Early

Socket positions, extractor ducting routes, oven circuits, dishwasher plumbing and boiler connections all need to be confirmed before the kitchen is ordered — not during the fit. Moving a socket after units are in place means pulling a cabinet off the wall and chasing into finished plaster. Planning these at first-fix stage, when the room is stripped back, costs a fraction of the price.

Step 6: Choose Materials That Work Together

Cabinet style, door finish, worktop material, flooring, splashback and hardware should all be chosen in relation to each other, not in isolation. A physical sample board — where you can see all materials together under your room’s natural light — prevents the disappointment of choices that looked great individually but do not work together in the finished room. Our design service includes material coordination as standard.

Step 7: Get Everything in Writing

Before any work begins, make sure you have a written quote that specifies exactly what is included, the timeline, the payment schedule and the warranty. Verbal agreements are difficult to enforce. A clear contract protects both you and the installer and sets expectations for the project before a single unit is delivered.
